While rates are similar for males and females the underlying causes often differ.

In an emergency department patients are present without a prior appointment; either by their own means or by that of an ambulance. An accident & emergency department is a medical treatment facility specializing in emergency medicine for patients. Other names of the emergency departments are accident & emergency department, emergency room, emergency ward, or casualty department. The emergency department is usually found in a hospital or other primary care center.
