Tips for the OET Reading section

1. Skim the Text: 

Begin by skimming through the text quickly to get a general idea of the topic and main points. Pay attention to headings, subheadings, and any bold or italicized text that may provide clues about the content.

2. Read the Questions First: 

Before reading the entire text, glance through the questions related to it. This will give you an idea of what information to look for while reading the passage, making it easier to spot relevant details (Keywords).

3. Highlight Keywords: 

As you read the text, underline or highlight important keywords and phrases. This will help you quickly locate information when answering the questions.

4. Focus on the Context:

Understanding the context is crucial for answering inference and purpose-related questions. Pay attention to the author’s tone, intentions, and the overall message conveyed.

5. Don’t Overlook Negatives: 

Be cautious with negative expressions in the questions, such as “not,” “except,” or “least.” These can change the meaning of the question, so read them carefully.

6. Be Mindful of Specific Details: 

For questions requiring specific information, go back to the relevant parts of the text to find accurate answers. Double-check numerical data or any specific details mentioned in the passage.

7. Look for Signal Words: 

Signal words like “however,” “in contrast,” “therefore,” or “consequently” can indicate a change in the direction or emphasis of the text, helping you understand relationships between ideas.

8. Don’t Assume Information

Only use the information presented in the text to answer the questions. Avoid bringing in your prior knowledge or assumptions.

9. Manage Your Time Wisely: 

Allocate time efficiently for each question. If you’re unsure about an answer, move on to the next question and return to it later if you have time.

10. Practice with Sample Questions: 

Familiarize yourself with different question types by practicing with sample OET Reading questions. This will help you become more comfortable with the format and improve your reading skills.
