Latest PTE Syllabus Changes (Effective August 2025)

Shorter Exam Duration โณ

The total PTE Academic exam duration has been significantly reduced to approximately 2 hours, down from the previous 3 hours. This change is designed to offer a more streamlined and focused testing experience.

Fewer Questions ๐Ÿ“‰

To align with the shorter test time, the overall number of questions across the sections has been decreased. While the core language skills remain assessed, the adjustment means fewer items for candidates to complete. For instance, some ‘Multiple Choice โ€“ Choose Single Answer’ and ‘Re-order Paragraphs’ tasks have been reduced in the Reading section.

New Question Types (Speaking & Writing) ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโœ๏ธ

Pearson is introducing two new question types in the Speaking & Writing section to better gauge authentic communication abilities:

  • Summarize Group Discussion: In this task, you’ll listen to a recorded conversation among multiple speakers and then summarize the key points in your own words.
  • Respond to a Situation: You’ll be presented with a real-life scenario, such as politely declining an invitation or offering assistance to a colleague, and you’ll need to formulate an appropriate verbal response.

Enhanced AI Scoring with Human Validation ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ

While the PTE Academic test remains primarily AI-scored, Pearson is incorporating human evaluation for certain tasks. This includes the new speaking tasks, along with existing ones like ‘Describe Image’, ‘Retell Lecture’, ‘Summarize Written Text’, ‘Essay’, and ‘Summarize Spoken Text’. This hybrid scoring model aims to enhance the accuracy and fairness of content and coherence assessment, while AI continues to evaluate aspects like pronunciation and fluency. This also implies that highly templated or memorized responses might be less effective, encouraging more natural language use.

No Optional Break โ˜•

The optional 10-minute break that was previously offered in the middle of the exam has been removed, aligning with the reduced overall test duration.

PTE Core Not Affected ๐ŸŽฏ

It’s important to note that these specific updates are for PTE Academic and PTE UKVI Academic only. The PTE Core test, which is used for Canadian permanent residency and work visas, is not impacted by these changes.

These modifications reflect Pearson’s ongoing efforts to ensure the PTE Academic test accurately measures the English language proficiency required for success in academic and professional environments.
